Drawing Manga/Anime p2: Noses

Hello!

So, last time we barely started working on manga. We discussed the very basics, drew the head and started working on eyes.  Today we're going to look at the nose.  This will be a pretty short blog so yay for everyone who hates long ones.

Ok, there's going to be slight differences with the nose depending on gender.  Honestly you can use any nose for any character but I'm going to show you my preferences.  A nose on a guy will be slightly bigger than a chick.

Chick noses

Here be a few examples of what I think looks good on girls.

  • Pointy nose - very simple nose, adjusting where the point sits will change the appearance.
  • Nostrils - consists of 2 triangular shapes where one side is bigger because there's more shadow on that side.
  • The Dot - of course this is the easiest to draw lol.  I think it looks silly but this gets used quite often.

Guy noses
  • The shadowed nose - I think this works best on men.  I really don't think it looks good on a female character at all (unless you intend for her to be masculine). It's a more complex nose for manga.  It's simply a pointed nose but shading on either side and underneath giving it a bit of depth.
  • The vertical line nose - Visually (especially if the image is small) it doesn't look very different than the dot.  Difference is, it's a line with a tiny bit of shading.
  • The horizontal line nose - My favorite of the ones that don't look like noses.  It's simple, a line with shading underneath.

Alrighty then! I guess that's it for today. Next time we will focus on the mouths.  Much fun!
Check ya later!!
